Commentary on Ruth 4

I have been studying the book of Ruth in the Bible in order to teach it to kids and I am fascinated by the customs of that day. For example, in chapter 4, it speaks of Boaz meeting the kinsman at the city gate. In ancient times, cities were fortified by massive walls for protection, and the city gate was the only entrance into the city. This is where court was held, people met to talk with friends,  and to learn the latest news and gossip. Many years ago when I was in Scotland, I remember the “city gate” to the castle. I was always intrigued about the entryway because it was quite spacious. Now, I have an idea what a city gate looked like. It’s living history!
